Employment Resources on the 'Net
February 20, 1998

If you're looking for a job or wondering what opportunities are available, you'll need to take advantage of the enormous resources that are available on the Internet. The days of solely looking through the newspaper or calling a headhunter are over. The resources that are currently available enable an individual to aggressively seek out employment opportunities without ever leaving their house. And many people claim that they received faster and better results from using the Internet.

A good place to start is the NY State Dept of Labor site at ( The site offered quick responses to our inquiries and the database was up to date and offered a wealth of possible employment opportunities in a variety of areas. You can search using keywords, job codes or by simply clicking through a series of pages.

The Business & Employment Center in the Buffalo Freenet, (, will load pretty fast and provide you with links to many useful web resources. Also check out WNY Web, under Business and Employment (, here you'll find several useful links to local employment resources. We also enjoyed using The Buffalo News Classifieds employment listings on-line at (, click on the "Help Wanted" link and search the current day or last Sunday's listings at your leisure.

The number of local resources available, numbered more than we have room for in this column. So we've simply checked the following list to make sure the sites are functional and offer them to you to check out for yourself.

Action Employment Agency web site ( )
Manpower Technical Services of Buffalo, NY, ( )
DeBellis & Catherine Associates, ( )
The Hoffman Partnership Group, Inc. - Executive Search, ( )
Western New York Jobs - Employment Listings, ( )
Buffalo and Erie County Private Industry Council ( )

The local Universities and colleges offer great resources both for students and employers. If you're an employer in town we recommend that you take a look at the following site. The University at Buffalo Career Planning and Placement web site, ( ), offers employers an area where they can list job or intern openings, and the University itself offers a wonderful web resume service that can help put a qualified individual into the right job. Next we surfed over to Buffalo State College Career Development Center, ( ) and checked out the "Job Listings, Employer Information" link. The page that pops up will offer links to job fairs, referral programs, and links to other major services. At Canisius College check out the Career Center, ( ), you'll find the "Employer Profiles" link really useful for finding background data on that company you may be interviewing with in the near future. The Erie Community College Career Resource Center, ( ) and Niagara Frontier College Placement Association, ( ) also offer good sites for both employers and individuals looking for work.

One of the biggest and most navigated places on the web is The Monster Board ( ). There's a lot to see and use at this site so make sure you set aside a little time. This site is a must see if you are seriously looking for employment opportunities. They advertise that "1 in 4 people who applys for a job ... receives an offer." Job search, Career Center Also Career Mosaic ( ) and Career Resource Center ( ) will open your eyes to the opportunities that currently exist. And just in case you're thinking that these places are just offering a bunch of listings, well think again. Everything from helpful hints, on-line resume writers and job listings broken down into every conceivable category are there for your use. Another must see is Career Magazine, ( ). This site went way beyond simply offering job listings. There are online articles, forums and a great little area devoted to "Be Your Own Boss", where you'll find business and franchise opportunities. At the suggestion of a close friend we checked out, ( ), and were a little surprised by the slowness of the site. But we did like the "Nations Leading Newspapers" link that allowed us to easily search 57 leading newspapers across the country. Another site that seemed to load a little slow was the Online Career Center, ( ). Eventhough it was a little sluggish it is worth mentioning as a good resource for job seekers. Click on the search jobs link at the top to get a pretty good categorical breakdown of job listings to make your search easier.
